What is Ovulation?

Some women get pregnant, have their baby, and go through their life not knowing much about the actual process of pregnancy.  This is because these women tend to get pregnant easily and will just except the fact that they are about to have a child.

While this is an ideal situation, this does not happen to all women.  Some women have a hard time getting pregnant.  They try many options and still there is no luck.  They eventually start to think that they or their husband might be infertile.  That could be a rather devastating blow because it means that you may never be able to have children together.  Fortunately, this usually is not the case.  You really just need to figure out what is going on and plan ahead in order to raise your chances of getting pregnant.

The main thing you need to know about is ovulation.  Although you may have heard the word before, chances are that you do not know what it is.  This is understandable since it is not usually talked about.  You hear about pregnancy all the time on television and in the movies, but they rarely ovulation aspect of it.  So you wonder what is ovulation.

Ovulation is actually pretty simple.  You may already know that you have a menstrual cycle.  This starts on the first day of your last period and ends the day before your next one.  This generally takes 28 days but it varies from woman to woman.  What you do not know is that ovulation occurs during this cycle.  In fact, ovulation dictates how long the cycle will last.  Ovulation happens when one of your ovaries releases an egg which travels to your uterus.  This is the time when you are most fertile.  If you are planning on having a baby, this is the time when you have the biggest chance of conceiving it.  Ovulation only lasts a few days though, so make sure that you plan ahead in order to use the time wisely.

If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, you will need to gauge an ovulation prediction.  This is when you figure out when you ovulate so that you can prepare for it.  Ovulation predictions are easy if you know what you are doing.  All you need to do is create an ovulation calendar.  You can use any calendar you want, even yearly wall variety, as long as you can mark information on each day.  Once you have that, all you need to do is take your basal body temperature every day and mark the results.  You will notice that a few days each cycle, your temperature will have risen.  This is your ovulation period.  During ovulation, a woman will generally be a degree warmer at the most.  This is the easiest way to find if and when you are ovulating.

Once you know when you ovulate, you can plan ahead.  Try to have sex every day during this period.  Don’t avoid sex at other times, though.  You can still get pregnant even if you are not ovulating.  Improve your odds by having sex on a regular basis.  This will also improve the sperm count, which further raises your odds.

Now you know about ovulation.  You know what it is and how it works.  You also know how it benefits you and how to tell when yours occurs.  With all of this information, you are likely to be much more successful in your pursuit of having a child.  If you find that you are still not having any luck, you should contact an obstetrician or a gynecologist for further tests.
