What to do During Your Pregnancy

So you have finally found out that you are pregnant.  After all, of that hoping and planning, the work has finally paid off.  In nine month’s time, you will have a brand new person in your life.  However, the work does not start there.  In fact, there are many things that you need to do during your pregnancy in order to ensure that your child starts its life on a positive note.  They will be healthier and happier if you take the right steps during the pregnancy. 

The first thing that you should do once you learn that you are pregnant is to figure out the due date.  You can do this several ways.  The best way is to visit a doctor and have them figure it out.  Obstetricians and gynecologists specialize in pregnancy.  They will know how to figure out when you will have your child.  You can also figure it out yourself by using an online due date calculator.  These are fairly simple and easy to use.  All you do is enter the first day of your last period.  Some calculators will also ask you how long your menstrual cycle usually is.  The average for this is 28 days, so if the calculator does not ask, this is the figure that they used.

Once you know the due date, you can do a lot of planning.  During your pregnancy, there are a lot of tasks that you must achieve.  For example, you may need to set up the baby’s room if this is your first pregnancy.  You will want the room ready for the baby’s arrival.  This includes any painting, furnishing and decorating.  Knowing the due date also helps when you are planning your maternity leave from work.  Your bosses will want to know ahead of time so that they can train your temporary replacements.

There are other important things that you need to do during your pregnancy.  For example, you will need to get the right nutrition.  Pregnancy nutrition is very important to the health of your child.  This can mean the difference between a healthy and unhealthy child, it is so important.  The main part of pregnancy nutrition is actually avoiding certain foods and drinks.  For example, you will need to avoid almost all seafood.  Seafood has mercury and some fish have very high levels.  Especially avoid shellfish and any raw or smoked fish.  These are definite no-nos. 

You should also avoid any raw or rare meat or unpasteurized cheese.  These can get you sick, which will get your unborn child sick as well.  Always err on the side of caution.  Completely avoid any caffeine, herbal tea, or alcohol.  These can all hurt your baby in many different ways.  If you want to make sure that you are getting the proper nutrition, you should take prenatal vitamins.  You can find these in any store that sells vitamins.  They will have the nutrients that pregnant women need in order to have a healthy pregnancy, birth and baby. 

If you want to know more about pregnancy, child birth, and raising a child, you should read informational books during your pregnancy.  These will clue you into what you will experience.  You will likely learn great tips for all stages of the process.  Often the most successful parents are the ones that did research on the matter.  Humans have been having children since the beginning, so it makes sense that there would be books written by experts on the subject.  This is the best way to make sure that what you are going through is normal.  You will also know what you can do to make sure that your child turns out well.
