Preparing for a Twin Pregnancy

You can only prepare for your pregnancy so much.  There are some aspects of it that are just unpredictable.  You cannot predict the sex of your child. 

You also cannot predict the color of their hair.  That is one of the great things about child birth.  The not knowing is an element that a lot of people like about it.  You start your pregnancy knowing only that you will be having a baby in about nine months.  Otherwise, the journey is all about finding out the precious details about your new arrival. 

One of the things that most people do not expect is a twin pregnancy.  This is when you have two children during your pregnancy instead of one.  There are two main ways that this can happen.  There are fraternal twins and identical twins.  Fraternal twins happen when two separate eggs become fertilized.  This is rare because only one egg should come out of your ovaries every month.  Still, two may come out.  Even then, they both may not become fertilized.  The other may just leave the uterus while the other becomes your new baby.  Still, very rarely, both eggs with become fertilized and attach itself to the womb.  While both of these babies will be born at roughly the same time, they will not look alike.  They may look similar since they are siblings, they still will not look exactly the same.  They will have their own DNA and their own fingerprints.  Essentially, fraternal twins are like regular siblings that happen to have the same birthday.  In this situation, it is possible that they may not be the same gender as well. 

Identical twins are a bit different.  Although these are what people think of when they think of twin pregnancy, these are actually the most rare version of this kind of pregnancy.  Instead of two eggs becoming fertilized, identical twins started out as one egg.  Once it became fertilized, it split into two separate eggs.  This means that the two children will look exactly the same, hence the name of these kinds of twins.  Because they look the same, they also have the same DNA and fingerprints.  They are essentially two different versions of the same person. 

If you find that you are going to have a twin pregnancy, there is some preparation that you should do.  First of all, you will be growing two children inside of you instead of one.  That means that your body will need to do even more work to support these babies.  A good thing to do is look into pregnancy nutrition.  You should make sure that you are eating the right foods and taking the right vitamins.  You can find out about pregnancy nutrition in books or online. 

You will also want to prepare for your twins by reading about how to raise them.  This will be much different from raising one child, especially if you are having identical twins.  These twins go through a lot of problems when it comes to their identity.  They strive to be different from their identical twin.  Learn more about what identical twins go through so that you can help them with it.  This is the best idea because they will likely have a lot to think about as they grow older.

While it is rare, twin pregnancies still happen.  Whether you are having fraternal or identical twins, you will still have double the love and double the join once you have these beautiful babies.  This will be the best day of your life because you are getting twice the beautiful gift as you normally would.
